This George IV sterling silver-gilt vinaigrette, in the Regency style, was made in Birmingham in 1828 by the renowned maker Joseph Willmore. The rectangular piece has an all-over ribbed design, a cast border decoration, a cartouche with engraved initials, and stamped hallmarks inside. The hinged lid opens to reveal a gilded interior and a pierced floral design grille, accompanied by a small dark sponge. Measuring 3.7 cm x 2.4 cm x 1 cm and weighing 18 grams, it displays minimal surface wear commensurate with age and use. In a contemporary home, this small antique container makes a refined display piece on a sideboard top, dressing table or collector cabinet shelf. It offers a tangible connection to early nineteenth-century craftsmanship and social customs.

Popular from the late eighteenth century through the Victorian era, a vinaigrette was a small, decorative pocket box designed to hold a sponge soaked in aromatic vinegar or perfume. Users inhaled the fragrance to mask unpleasant urban odours and prevent faintness caused by tight corsetry or ill health.

Vinaigrettes were predominantly crafted from sterling silver or gold. The interior was routinely gilded with a thin layer of gold, known as vermeil, to protect the silver metal from reaction and corrosion caused by acidic perfume solutions.

Authentic Regency period pieces feature official British hallmarks stamped on both the body and lid, including a makers mark, town mark, duty mark, date letter, and lion passant. Internal grilles usually display detailed hand-pierced floral or geometric filigree work.

Designers often group small silver boxes on tiered trays, display cabinets, or glass-topped coffee table boxes to accentuate their intricate detail. Placing them alongside period books or framed miniatures creates a curated desktop display.

Wipe the exterior gently with a dry, soft cotton microfibre cloth, avoiding abrasive polishes that strip thin gold leaf layers. The gilded interior should remain untouched with chemical cleaners to prevent degradation of the vermeil surface.
