This Georgian apothecary bottle dates from 1800 and takes the classic onion form associated with gentleman's libraries. The vessel is made from hand-blown dark green glass and displays a glossy finish over a broad bulbous body. A long tapered neck rises from the rounded base to terminate in a distinct applied glass string rim around the mouth. The glass shows subtle surface variations and reflections across the dark green body, capturing the traditional hand-crafted character of early glassmaking. The bottle stands 29 cm tall with a diameter of 20 cm. Today, this glass piece works well displayed upon a sideboard top or within a cabinet as a decorative interior accent.

An onion bottle is a form of free-blown glass vessel characterised by a broad, squat body and a narrow, tapered neck. Originating in the late seventeenth century and produced through the early eighteenth century, these bottles were primarily designed for storing, transporting, and ageing liquids such as wine or spirits.

During the eighteenth century, glassmakers mouth-blown dark glass bottles using iron dip-moulds or free-blowing techniques. The dark green or black glass was produced by adding iron and manganese oxides to the raw batch, which helped protect the contents from light exposure and UV degradation.

Authentic pieces typically feature an asymmetrical shape, surface iridescence or seed bubbles, a rough kick-up base with a pontil scar, and an applied glass collar or string rim around the lip designed to hold securing twine.

Antique glass bottles serve as structured accent pieces when arranged on console tables, window sills, or open shelving. Placing them near light sources highlights variations in glass thickness and tone while introducing architectural silhouette to a room.

Clean early glass vessels gently using lukewarm water and mild, non-abrasive detergent. Avoid sudden temperature changes or harsh chemicals, which can cause thermal shock or damage delicate surface patination and historical pontil marks.
