This Edwardian sterling silver sugar shaker follows a cylindrical form with a plain body, standing on a raised stepped base. The piece holds a silver colour with a polished metallic finish, featuring a pierced decorative cap secured by a twist and pull-off mechanism, a spiral flower-bud finial at the top, a moulded collar below the lid, and a small loop handle on the side. The maker Spurrier & Co produced the item in 1901, and the construction shows age-related surface marks from prior use. Measuring 11 cm high, 5 cm wide, and 5 cm deep, the sugar caster sits practically on a sideboard top or dining table setting in a home today. The piece integrates into an English Country House aesthetic, functioning as tabletop serveware while augmenting an existing collection of antique silver objects.

A sugar caster, also known as a sugar shaker or dredger, was designed during the seventeenth to early twentieth centuries to sprinkle granulated or caster sugar over desserts and fruit at the dining table.

Antique sugar casters were predominantly crafted from sterling silver or silver plate, featuring pierced metal caps designed to allow controlled distribution of fine sugar.

Authentic British Victorian pieces carry a set of hallmarks indicating the maker, purity mark such as the lion passant for sterling silver, assay office mark, and date letter denoting the year of manufacture.

An antique silver caster functions as a refined accent piece when displayed on a dining sideboard, curated bar cart, or open kitchen shelving alongside contemporary glassware.

Wash in warm soapy water, dry thoroughly with a soft cloth, and polish periodically using a specialised silver polish to prevent tarnish and protect pierced details from residue buildup.
