Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. This pair of twentieth-century gentleman's library cupboards consists of two tall dark brown hardwood units in a traditional matching design. Each piece stands on a stepped plinth base and contains an upper door with a fielded panel, a single drawer fitted with a small round brass knob, and a lower door with a matching fielded panel. The upper door of the left unit includes a pierced vertical aperture with a keyhole escutcheon below, while the lower door on the same unit displays a hand-painted olive green panel decorated with a gold-toned urn motif. The rich timber grain shows warm tones throughout, paired with bevelled mouldings around the door panels. Measuring 150 cm high, 53 cm wide and 41.5 cm deep, these cupboards provide vertical storage solutions for the home. In a modern interior, this practical pair works well placed either together or separately within a bedroom, living room, hallway or study. Each cupboard opens via doors to reveal internal shelving compartments designed to keep belongings neatly organised. The dark hardwood surfaces and traditional proportions bring character to classic and transitional interior schemes, offering versatile storage for books, linens, or daily accessories while maintaining a narrow footprint against interior walls.

FAQs

These pieces are characterized by vertical, slender proportions designed to maximize floor space while offering substantial storage. Originating from European cabinetmaking traditions, they frequently incorporate panelled doors, central drawers, and decorative elements such as painted panels or carved apertures.

Traditional construction relies on solid hardwoods such as oak, fruitwood, or walnut, featuring mortise and tenon joinery alongside framed door panels. Drawers typically display hand-cut dovetail joints, while hardware includes turned brass knobs and iron or steel lock mechanisms.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of natural ageing including minor surface wear, historic patination, and oxidisation around metal fittings. Inspection of the drawer interiors and rear panels often reveals uneven tool marks and traditional wood joinery consistent with mid-century manufacturing methods.

A pair of tall cupboards provides architectural symmetry when placed on either side of a fireplace, alcove, or doorway. They serve as ideal vertical anchors in a dining room or living space, balancing low-profile furniture while offering concealed functional storage.

Dust the timber surfaces regularly using a clean, soft microfibre cloth, and apply a neutral beeswax polish annually to protect the grain. Take care to avoid applying wax or chemical cleaners directly to hand-painted panels, opting instead for gentle dry dusting.
