This large mid 19th century French footstool dates from circa 1860 in the French Rococo Revival style, constructed from wood with a giltwood finish in gold and a padded seat upholstered in beige linen. The serpentine base displays a beaded border, ribbon decoration and foliate carving on the apron, whilst the four cabriole legs feature acanthus carving and terminate in scroll feet. The maker's stamp reads 'LOIDRAULT FRERES PARIS'. Measuring 44.5 cm high, 68.5 cm wide and 68.5 cm deep, this stool is stable and sits at the foot of a bed, in a lounge as an extra seat, or repurposed as a coffee table. Following traditional French chateau design, the piece balances a sturdy frame with decorative details like the carved giltwood surface and neutral fabric. It provides a practical seating option or surface area in a living room or bedroom setting while maintaining the period aesthetic of mid 19th century French craftsmanship.

Mid-19th-century French stools, often influenced by Louis XV design, feature carved wooden frames covered in gold leaf gilding with sweeping cabriole legs and botanical motifs. These pieces served both functional seating roles and decorative displays in formal salon interiors.

Traditional giltwood frames were hand-carved from dense hardwoods or softwoods, coated in layers of gesso plaster, and covered with thin sheets of genuine gold leaf. The frames were joined using traditional mortise and tenon joinery before upholstery was applied.

Authentic 19th-century giltwood displays natural wear to the gold leaf, often revealing red or grey clay bole underneath, along with minor gesso cracking along wood joints. Maker stamps, hand-cut joinery, original webbing, and heavy timber weight also indicate genuine period construction.

A carved giltwood stool can be incorporated into contemporary settings as an occasional footrest beside a sofa, a vanity table seat, or a low decorative accent piece beneath a console table. Pairing metallic gilding with neutral linen fabrics balances historical detail with modern simplicity.

Giltwood frames should be cleaned exclusively with a soft, dry feather duster or dry brush, avoiding liquids or chemical polishes which dissolve water-gesso finishes. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and high humidity to protect both the wood joinery and delicate gold leaf finish.
