Pair of French Empire Gilt-bronze and Carrara Marble Candlesticks, Circa 1830

19th century
Description

An elegant and highly decorative pair of early 19th-century French Empire candlesticks, of particularly fine quality and pleasing proportions.

Each candlestick is constructed from richly coloured Carrara marble, skilfully cut into rectangular polished sections to form the stepped bases and architectural columns. The marble is complemented throughout by finely cast and gilded bronze mounts, incorporating decorative feet, mouldings, borders and applied classical ornament.

The upper sections are executed in solid gilt bronze, with finely detailed candle holders and separate removable sconces. The restrained architectural form, combined with the contrasting warmth of the gilt bronze and mellow tones of the marble, is characteristic of the refined taste of the French Empire period.

The gilt-bronze mounts retain an attractive aged surface, with areas of mellowing and patination consistent with their age, beautifully complementing the richly coloured marble. The candlesticks remain in excellent original condition and retain a particularly handsome and sophisticated appearance.

An exceptionally decorative and scarce pair, displaying the elegance and classical character associated with the finest French Empire interiors.

Dealers Notes

Robert Belcher Antiques was established in 1984 and is a high-quality retailer of interesting, rare antiques and decorative objects. After forty years of shop keeping and maintaining beautiful showrooms, which have been regularly open six days a week, Robert and Wendy have now taken a slightly different approach to their business. Having sold their retail premises, the antique business is now fully online. The picture framing service has ceased to operate because of moving online.

You can contact Robert and Wendy by email or telephone to discuss items from their extensive catalogue of attractive pieces and make purchases. Customers can rest assured that the long-established dealership is continuing to run in an exceedingly professional way, selling genuine and high-quality items which are guaranteed to please the most discerning collector, decorator or homeowner.

All items will be personally hand packaged to a high standard. Small items are extensively wrapped using the best materials and are often double boxed. Items are then shipped with DHL or Royal Mail fully insured and often with next day delivery. Larger items would be personally delivered or sent with a specialist antique delivery firm, or for outside the U.K, a professional shipping company.

Please enjoy viewing their collection of rare and interesting pieces and have the assurance that Robert and Wendy will do their utmost to make sure your experience is exceptional, as has been recognised by many customers who have bought with confidence regularly over the years.

Produced during the early nineteenth century, French Empire candlesticks are characterised by classical Neoclassical motifs, symmetrical forms, and high-quality metalwork combined with natural stone bases.

Craftsmen combined cast gilt bronze, often referred to as ormolu, with polished marble or porphyry bases to create stable and decorative light fixtures.

Authentic pieces feature threaded central iron or brass rods holding individual cast sections together, hand-chased surface details, and natural wear to the gilding or patination.

Displaying a symmetrical pair on a modern fireplace mantelpiece or a contemporary dining sideboard adds architectural texture and historical depth to contemporary rooms.

Remove dust with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or soft brush, avoiding chemical cleaners or abrasive metal polishes that strip original fire-gilding or etch marble surfaces.
