Description

Fine Early 18th-Century Japanese Imari Trumpet Vase – Large Antique Porcelain Vase with Horse Decoration

A fine and impressive early 18th-century Japanese Imari trumpet vase, dating to the Edo period, and an excellent example of large-format Japanese export porcelain.

Standing approximately 59 cm (23¼ inches) high, with a substantial 27 cm (10¾ inch) rim diameter, this tall, slender trumpet-shaped vase makes a striking decorative and architectural statement.

The vase is beautifully decorated in the characteristic Japanese Imari palette, with rich blue, iron-red and gilt decoration. The principal decoration comprises two large panels, each depicting a pair of spotted horses within a traditional Japanese landscape, creating a particularly distinctive and unusual subject.

Surrounding the main horse panels are numerous smaller decorative panels containing flowering chrysanthemums, geometric designs and other traditional Japanese motifs, all arranged across the elegant trumpet-shaped body.

The combination of its exceptional scale, early date, distinctive horse decoration and traditional Imari colouring makes this a particularly eye-catching example of 18th-century Japanese porcelain.

The vase is supplied with a later custom-made wooden display stand, specially made to provide additional stability and prevent the tall vase from toppling. The stand is included in the asking price.

There has been professional restoration to the rim, which has been carefully carried out and is very difficult to see when the vase is displayed.

This large early 18th-century Japanese Imari porcelain trumpet vase dates to the Edo period and measures 59 cm high with a 27 cm rim diameter. The tall, slender form stands upon a later custom-made wooden display stand for stability. Decorated in an Imari palette of rich blue, iron-red, and gilt, the porcelain displays two primary panels showing pairs of spotted horses within a landscape, complemented by smaller panels of flowering chrysanthemums and geometric borders with underglaze blue detail. Professional restoration is present to the rim. It is suited for placement on a sideboard top within an English country house, period interior, or as part of an antiques collection.

Imari ware refers to Japanese porcelain made in the Arita region and exported from the port of Imari, typically featuring characteristic underglaze cobalt blue combined with overglaze iron red and gilding.

These vessels are constructed from high-fired kaolin clay to create hard-paste porcelain, then decorated using underglaze cobalt blue painting followed by secondary firings for overglaze enamel pigments.

Period Imari porcelain typically features slight glaze irregularities, spur marks on the base from kiln supports, a slightly blue-grey tint to the body, and hand-painted enamel application with visible variation.

Position the vase as a singular focal feature on a console table, mantelpiece, or sideboard where its flared silhouette and patterned surface contrast against minimalist or neutral backdrops.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth. Avoid chemical solvents, abrasive sponges, or immersion in water, as these can wear away overglaze enamels and surface gilding.
