This pair of English antique wall lights dates from the early 20th century in an English Country style. The fixtures are constructed from bronze with a warm bronze colour and show a faded patination across their metal surfaces. Each unit consists of a baluster central column featuring an etched decorative pattern, an urn finial, a pierced ring finial at the top, and twin scrolled arms extending outward. These arms terminate in circular bobeche drip pans, bulbous candle sconces, and white candle drip sleeves fitted with electric bulbs. Measuring 33 cm high, 31 cm wide, and 14 cm deep, these wall lights are suitable for installation on a narrow wall space in a hallway, drawing room, or study within a home today.

Antique bronze wall lights, or sconces, originated as functional wall-mounted candle holders designed to illuminate corridors and main reception rooms prior to electrification. During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, metalworkers crafted intricate twin-arm designs with cast central balusters to maximize light reflection across living spaces.

Classical wall sconces were typically constructed using lost-wax or sand casting methods from solid bronze or brass alloys. The individual components, including turned backplates, cast scroll arms, and candle nozzles, were hand-assembled using threaded rods and steel pins.

Authentic antique wall sconces exhibit subtle variations in hand-cast metal, period threading, and signs of aged patination or gentle oxidisation in unpolished recesses. Historical electrification conversions often show early drilled holes or surface wiring channels near the candle cups.

A pair of antique sconces can be mounted on either side of a contemporary mirror above a console table or placed within fireplace alcoves to provide warm accent illumination. Positioning classic bronze lighting against dark painted walls creates strong visual contrast and highlights the metallic surface detail.

Dust the metal surfaces regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth to preserve the natural aged patina. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive polishes, as these can remove historic patination and accelerate surface corrosion.
