A joined stool, also historically referred to as a joint stool, is a piece of seating furniture constructed by joiners using mortise and tenon joints held with wooden pegs. During the English Commonwealth period (16491660), these stools were crafted primarily from native oak and served as the standard form of everyday seating in households before chairs became widely accessible.

These stools were built using solid timber frames joined together with mortise and tenon joinery, secured by turned wooden dowels or pegs without metal nails or modern glues. They featured sturdy turned or gun-barrel legs connected by heavy lower stretchers near the base for stability, topped with a rectangular wooden seat with hand-moulded edges.

Authentic pieces feature signs of hand-planed timbers, irregular peg holes, oxidation around joints, and natural wear patterns on the footrests and lower stretchers from centuries of use. The wood will display a deep, aged patina and shrinkage consistent with centuries of drying, particularly along the seat top and joinery gaps.

A 17th-century joined stool serves as a versatile accent piece, functioning as a small side table alongside a sofa, a plant pedestal, or a decorative object in an entryway. Its historic timber texture adds visual weight and warmth to contemporary minimal spaces or traditional period schemes.

Keep early oak furniture in a stable room climate away from direct heat sources and excessive moisture to prevent warping or splitting. Preserve the natural surface by periodically applying a quality natural beeswax polish and dusting with a soft, dry cloth.
