Large 19th Century Mahogany Tray Top Night Commode with Marquetry C.1800

A particularly large late Georgian mahogany tray-top night commode, dating from the early 19th century and of unusually substantial proportions. The raised tray top is enclosed on all four sides by a shaped gallery incorporating cut-out carrying handles. Below is a pair of panelled cupboard doors, attractively veneered and centred by oval floral marquetry panels. The shaped panels are framed with contrasting barber's-pole stringing, giving the otherwise restrained façade considerable decorative interest. The cupboard provides a generous open storage space.

The lower section is fitted with two full-width drawers, each with cockbeaded edges and brass drop handles, above a narrow band of contrasting dark stringing. The piece stands on its original extended stile feet, with shaped aprons continuing around the sides and back. Of particular note, the commode is finished to the back. Together with the shaped gallery continuing around all four sides, this means the piece can comfortably be positioned away from a wall or used in the centre of a room.

Originally conceived as a night commode, the interior has been converted at some point in its history, leaving a useful and versatile piece of furniture. Its unusually generous scale also makes it suitable for use as a bedside cabinet, drinks cabinet, occasional cupboard or decorative storage piece.

CONDITION

Presented in good antique condition, with the wear, marks and alterations typical of a piece over 200 years old. There are various age-related marks, scratches and knocks throughout, together with some old ink staining to the tray top. There are shrinkage splits to the sides and cupboard doors, together with minor losses and historic repairs to the veneers and stringing, as well as a piece of cockbeading missing to the right hand side of the lower door.

The piece has been converted from its original commode arrangement to create two functioning drawers. There are also old handle holes visible to the drawer fronts, indicating that the present brass handles are later replacements. Despite the expected age-related wear and historic alterations, the commode remains structurally sound and presents particularly well, retaining a good warm colour and much of its original decorative character.
