Description

A good example of a Georgian sterling silver caddy spoon with a distinctive large shovel shaped spoon and short handle. It has a beautifully engraved pattern and vacant cartouche on the end of the handle.

It is clearly hallmarked for Birmingham, 1809 and the maker Joseph Willmore. It weighs approximately 7g.

It is in good condition for its age. There are no major damages and it displays well. There are some faint surface marks and minor dinks here and there but nothing detrimental. It has been gently cleaned and polished and is ready for use.

Tea caddy spoons emerged in Great Britain during the late eighteenth century as specialized utensils designed to scoop dry tea leaves from a caddy into a teapot. As imported tea was a high-value commodity during the Georgian era, these spoons were created with short handles to fit directly inside tea caddy compartments.

The majority of Georgian caddy spoons were hand-crafted from sterling silver (925 purity standard). Silversmiths utilized techniques such as hand-stamping, bright-cut engraving, and hand-chasing to ornament the bowls and handles with floral, geometric, or pricked patterns.

Authentic Georgian silver spoons feature British hallmark stamps indicating the standard mark (lion passant), town mark, makers mark, date letter, and duty mark (Monarchs head). The physical weight, signs of hand craftsmanship, and period-appropriate engraving techniques like bright-cutting also distinguish genuine pieces.

Small silverware items can be integrated into contemporary decor by displaying them inside glass-topped shadow boxes, arranged on dark lacquered trays on a sideboard, or placed alongside antique glassware in a lighted display cabinet.

Clean sterling silver using a specialised, non-abrasive silver polishing cloth or cream to remove tarnish without stripping detailed engraving. Store the item in a dry environment wrapped in anti-tarnish cloth to prevent oxidisation caused by atmospheric humidity and sulfur.
