These Georgian sterling silver wine coasters date from the period around 1800. Each circular piece comprises a polished silver body with a plain rim and a turned brown mahogany wooden base featuring a central circular silver boss. Hallmarks for Thomas Robinson I in London 1807 are stamped along the lower silver moulding. Both items display careful preservation with a bright polished silver finish and rich warm timber tones. Measuring 4.2 cms in height and 14.8 cms in diameter, the coasters are compact enough for practical placement. They sit comfortably on a dining table or sideboard top to hold bottles during meals or formal gatherings. Their classic proportions suit traditional and period interior settings.

FAQs

Wine coasters were created in 18th and early 19th-century Britain to slide decanters and bottles smoothly across polished wooden dining tables without scratching or staining the tabletop.

They typically feature a sterling silver outer body combined with a turned wooden base, often mahogany, fitted with a central silver boss or plaque.

Authentic pieces display official British hallmarks stamped along the outer rim or base edge, indicating silver purity, makers mark, assay office, and the date letter corresponding to the period.

Position them on a sideboard, drink trolley, or dining table holding glass decanters to add historical texture and reflective metallic detail to a contemporary space.

Gently polish the silver rim using a specialized silver cloth while keeping liquid cleaners away from the wooden base, which should only be dusted with a clean, dry cloth.
