Menu holders became popular during the late Victorian and Edwardian eras as formal dining etiquette required individualized seating and menu displays. Pieces crafted in the Art Nouveau style between 1890 and 1910 incorporated organic forms, sinuous curves, and stylized natural or female motifs.

High-end Edwardian menu holders were predominantly cast in solid sterling silver, often featuring hallmarked silver bases weighted with lead or resin for stability. Electroplated nickel silver (EPNS) was also used as a more accessible alternative.

Authentic British sterling silver pieces feature official assay hallmarks, including the lion passant mark for silver purity, a town mark, a date letter, and a makers mark. Assessing the crispness of relief casting and correct period styling also helps confirm authenticity.

Beyond formal dinner settings, these small functional objects can be repurposed on an office desk or sideboard to hold name cards, photographs, or handwritten notes, adding historical texture to contemporary tabletop displays.

Silver should be cleaned using a soft, lint-free cloth and specialized silver polish designed to remove tarnish without stripping fine detail. Avoid harsh chemical dips or abrasive pads, and store in a dry environment to slow down oxidisation.
