Decanter labels, often referred to as bottle tickets, emerged in the eighteenth century as spirits and wines were increasingly served in clear glass decanters rather than labelled bottles. These small plaques hung around the decanter neck to identify contents such as rum, port, or sherry.

While pewter, enamel, and porcelain were occasionally used, sterling silver was the predominant material for high-quality bottle tickets during the Georgian and Victorian eras. Construction typically involved hand-stamping or casting the metal shape, engraving the name of the spirit, and attaching a link chain for hanging.

Authentic Georgian silver bottle tickets feature period British hallmarks, including the monarchs head duty mark, town mark, lion passant, and makers initials. Hand-engraved lettering from this era usually demonstrates precise craftsmanship with subtle variations characteristic of manual tool work.

An antique decanter label can be displayed on a modern bar cart or sideboard, suspended around the neck of a crystal decanter or glass carafe. It also serves as a collectible display piece inside a glazed cabinet or mounted within a shallow display box.

Clean sterling silver labels gently using a soft, lint-free microfibre cloth and a mild silver polish specifically formulated for antique metalwork. Avoid aggressive scrubbing around engraved lettering, and store the piece in a dry environment to minimise oxidisation.
