This nineteenth-century mourning locket pendant is made from 18ct yellow gold and measures 2.7 cm x 2.3 cm including the bail. The piece has a swirling patterned front finished with blue enamel, and includes a small blue-enamelled bail at the top. The interior contains a lock of hair set behind an uncracked glass panel. The blue enamel remains intact with a small area of wear on the bail. Collectors can display this antique pendant within a display cabinet or wear it suspended from a chain around the neck. The object rests inside a dark blue velvet-lined presentation box with a cream satin inner lid and a decorative metallic border along the edge. The locket provides a traditional example of nineteenth-century memorial jewellery suitable for daily wear or incorporation into an established collection.

Mourning and sentimental lockets gained prominence during the nineteenth century, particularly during the Victorian era, as keepsakes to honour loved ones. Turquoise enamel was frequently used in sentimental jewellery as the colour symbolized forget-me-not flowers and eternal remembrance.

These lockets were typically crafted from high-carat yellow gold, such as 15ct or 18ct, and decorated using champleve or basse-taille enamelling techniques. Internal compartments were often fitted with glass covers or bezels to protect a lock of hair or a portrait miniature.

Authentic pieces usually display hallmarks, makers marks, or period-appropriate hand engraving rather than modern laser etching. Look for subtle signs of wear on the enamel, hand-finished hinges, and glass or mica inserts inside the compartment.

An antique locket can be suspended from a modern fine gold chain or layered alongside contemporary pendants of varying lengths. It functions well as a focal point for both minimalist necklines and textured knitwear.

Enamel should be kept away from harsh chemicals, perfumes, and sudden temperature shifts which can cause cracking. Clean gently using a soft, dry lint-free cloth and avoid submerging internal lockets in water to prevent damage to internal compartments.
