This Edwardian English sugar basket combines solid sterling silver and rich cranberry red glass. The item displays a pierced lattice geometric pattern across the metal frame, a curved swing handle, and three small round ball feet supporting the body. The fitted glass liner sits securely inside the silver mount, showing a deep translucent crimson colour contrasting with the bright polished silver finish. Hallmarks for Birmingham 1909 appear on the metal components, indicating the work of silversmith William Henry Sparrow. The surface remains free from visible dings, splits, chips, cracks, or repairs. Measuring 8.8 cm across, 5.6 cm tall to the rim, and 12 cm to the top of the handle, this compact vessel suits placement on a sideboard top or display cabinet within a traditional country house interior. The piece functions well as a decorative table accent or as a small container for holding sugar lumps during afternoon tea service in a dining room or living space.

Silver baskets containing cranberry glass liners became popular in Britain during the Victorian and Edwardian eras. Cranberry glass, created by adding gold salts to molten glass, was paired with pierced sterling silver holders to serve sugar, bonbons, or sweetmeats at formal dining tables.

The metallic holder was formed from sterling silver sheet metal, pierced or cut using hand tools or presses to create geometric lattice patterns, and fitted with a hinged swing handle. The cranberry glass insert was hand-blown to fit precisely within the silver frame, featuring a polished rim.

Authentic British pieces bear a full set of silver hallmarks, including the lion passant for sterling quality, an assay office symbol, a date letter, and a makers mark. The glass liner should display slight variations indicative of hand-blown glass, including a pontil mark on the base.

Position the piece on a dining table centre, sideboard, or mantelpiece where natural light can pass through the cranberry glass. It can serve as a decorative focal point or act as a functional container for small items.

Remove the glass liner before cleaning to prevent moisture from trapping against the silver. Wash the glass gently in warm water with mild detergent, while polishing the sterling silver frame using a dedicated silver cloth to remove tarnish without harming the metal.
