Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1880s:
Pierced fretwork swan-neck pediment: late Victorian Chippendale revival work.
Shallow relief carved scrolling foliage: machine-assisted carving finished by hand.
Geometric astragal glazing bars: typical late nineteenth-century cabinetmaking.
Cast brass rococo handles: light surface darkening from handling.
Rubbed polish on the spade feet: decades of floor-level wear.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian display cabinet dates from 1880 and takes the form of a glazed cabinet section mounted on a serpentine two-drawer table base, constructed from dark brown mahogany with glass and brass hardware. The piece stands 177 cm high, 76.5 cm wide, and 41 cm deep overall, with a surface height of 81 cm above the drawers. It includes a carved pierced pediment at the top, astragal glazed double doors opening to reveal two adjustable shelves, and intricate floral carving across the drawer fronts and upper frame. The base incorporates original brass swing handles on the drawers, square tapering legs with spade feet, and a shaped lower undertier shelf connecting the legs. In a modern interior, this cabinet serves as a formal display unit for living rooms, studies, or dining areas to showcase collections of small antiques, ceramics, or books. The combination of enclosed upper shelving and lower drawer storage offers practical utility alongside traditional Victorian design elements.

FAQs

Popularised during the nineteenth century, Victorian mahogany display cabinets are characterised by dark timber finishes, intricately carved pediments, and glazed doors designed for displaying china or collectibles.

Cabinetmakers primarily utilised solid mahogany and mahogany veneers, clear glass panes arranged with wooden astragal bars, and cast brass handles or escutcheons.

Authentic examples feature hand-cut dovetail joints on internal drawers, original glass with slight surface variations, and secondary woods such as pine or oak for interior linings.

Position the cabinet against a neutral or dark backdrop to contrast the dark mahogany timber, using the upper glazed section to house curated ceramics, books, or glassware.

Dust surfaces regularly using a clean, soft microfibre cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish twice a year while keeping the piece away from direct heat sources.
