Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian canteen of cutlery is a purpose-built wooden chest or cabinet designed to store and organise a complete set of silver flatware. Typically lined with fabric to prevent tarnishing, these canteens emerged during the nineteenth century as formal dining traditions expanded.

The outer cabinets are commonly constructed from hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or walnut, often featuring flush brass campaign handles and fittings. Inside, the flatware comprises solid sterling silver or silver plate, resting in fitted fabric-lined drawers.

Authentic British sterling silver pieces bear official assay office hallmarks, including the lion passant mark, a makers mark, a date letter, and a town mark. Victorian examples frequently feature popular period patterns such as Fiddle, Kings, or Queens.

A wooden cutlery canteen can be positioned atop a dining room sideboard or console table to add historic texture and craftsmanship to contemporary dining spaces. The chest provides both visual structure and practical storage for formal entertaining accessories.

Silver flatware should be washed by hand in warm soapy water, dried immediately with a soft cloth, and polished periodically with specialized silver cleaner. The exterior wooden cabinet requires regular dusting and occasional treatment with beeswax polish while remaining clear of direct heat sources.
