Description

Technical Description

A large 19th-century overshot glass water jug dating to c1880.

It has a cut and gilded rim with a curved prism-cut pouring lip to the front. The tapered cylindrical body is decorated with clear overshot glass and is fitted with a hollow ribbed claw handle. Polished pontil retaining its original black enamelled museum catalogue number.

A handsome and decorative Victorian water jug, combining the distinctive overshot technique with practical form and elegant proportions. The surviving museum catalogue number adds an interesting layer to its history, indicating that it was once part of a documented collection.

Excellent, clean and clear, no chips, cracks or restoration. Age-related wear to the gilded rim.

Historical Context

Overshot glass was made during the Victorian era in many different locations, including England, Europe, and the USA, where Boston & Sandwich made some outstanding decorative and functional pieces. It is created by rolling the hot glass in tiny pieces of broken glass and then reheated to remove the sharp edges, producing a very rustic look and feel.

One of a number of superb examples from the amazing glass collection of John and Poppy Stallebrass.

Overshot glass, often referred to as ice glass, is a glassmaking technique popularised in the nineteenth century where a hot molten glass gather is rolled over crushed glass fragments before being blown into its final form, resulting in a textured, frost-like exterior finish.

These vessels were typically hand-blown using lead or soda glass, with handles drawn and applied individually while hot. Decorative elements such as gilded rims were applied using gold leaf or liquid gold suspension and fired to fuse the metal to the rim.

Authentic period examples often feature a ground pontil mark or smoothed base, slight irregularity in the applied texture, genuine wear or gentle rubbing on the gilded trim, and evidence of hand-applied handle joins rather than modern mould seams.
