Victorian Brass Telescopic Oil Lamp Converted to Electric

19th century
Description

A good example of a Victorian brass telescopic oil lamp which has been converted to an electric lamp. It has a heavy round base with Art Nouveau style feet and a central tubular upright supporting the brass oil font and burner. The top part is telescopic and can be adjusted in height using the screw on the side. It is a good quality piece and the lamp is stamped "Manufactured in Germany by the Veritas Lamp Works".

The bulb holder sits atop the old burner. It has been PAT tested and rewired to modern standards to take a standard bayonet bulb.

It is in good original condition and is strong and sturdy. There are some signs of age and use, some minor marks and a few small dinks and dents around the font but no major damages. The brass has been lightly polished and it displays well.

This Victorian standard lamp is formed from brass with a polished finish and a warm gold colour. The heavy round base has three scrolled feet and sits beneath a central telescopic stem with an adjustment screw on the side. At the top, a traditional oil font reservoir incorporates an electrical lamp holder where the old burner used to sit. The metal shows minor marks, small dinks and dents around the font, and is stamped to indicate manufacture in Germany by the Veritas Lamp Works. The piece stands 135 cm high and 33 cm wide. Positioned in an empty corner, the lamp works well in a gentleman's library or a study to provide ambient illumination. The electrical wiring has been updated to modern standards to accommodate a standard bayonet bulb, while the original proportions and construction remain sturdy. The adjustable height allows the column to suit various seating arrangements and spatial requirements within a traditional interior setting.

Telescopic standard lamps gained prominence in the late nineteenth century during the Victorian era. Initially engineered to burn paraffin or lamp oil, these tall standing fixtures featured adjustable central columns that allowed users to manually alter the height of the light source for reading or ambient room illumination.

These fixtures were predominantly constructed from solid cast and spun brass, often featuring weighted iron inside the base to ensure stability. Mechanisms included knurled brass thumbscrews or tension locks on the stem, while upper sections contained copper or brass fuel reservoirs.

Authentic period examples display characteristic structural elements such as a reservoir or font at the top, historical adjustment keys, and heavy tripod or patterned bases. Conversion to electricity is indicated by secondary wiring pathways, bulb holders fitted into the original burner collar, and the absence of a glass chimney.

A brass standard lamp serves as functional task lighting beside an armchair, reading desk, or sofa. Positioned in an empty corner, the metallic surface catches light while providing targeted illumination when paired with a fabric or parchment lampshade.

Unlacquered brass naturally develops a darker patina over time, which can be maintained by light dusting with a dry microfiber cloth or polished with specialised brass cleaner if a bright shine is preferred. Electrical conversions should be periodically inspected by a qualified electrician to ensure safety compliance.
