Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A secretaire bureau bookcase is a dual-purpose piece of furniture featuring an upper glazed cabinet atop a chest of drawers, incorporating a drop-front or pull-out drawer designed as a compact writing desk. Popular in the 18th and 19th centuries, it provided space-saving storage and writing facilities for study or drawing room settings.

These pieces were predominantly crafted from solid mahogany or flame mahogany veneers, often utilising oak or pine as secondary timbers for internal drawer linings. Decorative components typically included hand-cut glass panels held by timber glazing bars and solid brass handles and escutcheons.

Authentic pieces feature hand-sawn dovetail joints, original brass backplates, and subtle irregularities in hand-blown glass panes. Secondary drawer timbers show natural age-related shrinkage, while keyholes display genuine wear from historical use.

Position the cabinet against a primary wall in a living room, study, or hallway to serve as an architectural focal point. Style the upper shelves with leather-bound books and ceramic objects, keeping the lower writing section functional or discreetly closed.

Dust surfaces regularly with a clean, soft microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the timber finish. Keep the item away from direct radiator heat sources and sustained sunlight to prevent wood shrinkage or fading.
