Art Deco Burr Walnut and Leather Stool

1920 - 1940
Description

A stunning Art Deco burr walnut and leather stool. This was made in England, it dates from the 1930’s.

This is of superb quality, it is a lovely and very useful size. It would be perfect for an entry way, at the foot of a bed or in various other settings around the home. The base has gorgeous burr walnut grain patterns, it wraps all the way round so this looks identical front and back.

We have had the walnut stripped and re-polished to a very high standard, the cream leather upholstery has been re-done fairly recently. This is in superb overall condition, with just some incredibly minor wear to the leather that is barely noticeable at all.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Art Deco furniture, emerging in the 1920s and 1930s, is characterised by geometric forms, clean architectural lines, and the use of rich, figure-grained wood veneers such as burr walnut. The style emphasizes symmetry, streamlined profiles, and high-quality craftsmanship.

Art Deco seating from this period typically features solid hardwood framing overlaid with figurative timber veneers, particularly burr walnut or rosewood. Cushioning was constructed using coil springs, horsehair or felt padding, and upholstered in leather or heavyweight woven textiles.

Authentic pieces exhibit book-matched or slip-matched timber veneers over stable secondary woods like pine or mahogany. Traditional joinery, such as hand-cut dovetails on internal framing and original spring-bound seat construction, further indicates period authenticity.

A low Art Deco stool works effectively placed at the foot of a bed, positioned beneath a console table, or utilized as an accent seat in a living area. The combination of cream leather and rich timber pairs well with both minimalist modern decor and classic period settings.

Dust timber surfaces regularly with a soft cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish occasionally to protect the veneer finish. Leather should be cleaned using a damp cloth and treated with a dedicated leather conditioner to prevent drying out or cracking over time.
