Antique Edwardian Mahogany Bureau Bookcase Writing Desk C1910

1900 - 1920
For Sale by MebleinUK
Description

A beautiful and elegant antique English bureau bookcase, dating from approximately 1910 and designed in the Georgian Revival tradition.

A particularly attractive feature of this piece is its unusually slim and compact proportion, measuring only 64 cm wide while providing a combination of book storage, display space, writing surface and concealed storage. It would be particularly suitable for a study, living room, bedroom, hallway or smaller home where a full-size bureau would be too imposing.

The upper bookcase section features a single glazed door with decorative geometric astragal glazing. Behind the door is a spacious interior fitted with adjustable wooden shelves, allowing the arrangement to be altered to accommodate books, decorative objects or collections.

Below is the traditional fall-front bureau. The front lowers to create a practical writing surface suitable for correspondence, paperwork or modern use with a laptop. Inside is a fitted arrangement of pigeonholes, small drawers and a central cupboard, retaining the traditional character of an English writing bureau.

A further drawer and enclosed cupboard to the lower section provide useful additional storage.

The piece stands on traditional bracket feet and is finished in a rich, dark mahogany tone, giving it an understated and elegant appearance.

Importantly, the bureau retains its original key.

Good antique condition with a solid and sturdy construction.

The piece displays genuine signs of age and previous use, including surface marks, scratches, variations in colour and wear to the writing surface.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An Edwardian bureau bookcase is a dual-purpose timber storage unit dating from the early 20th century in Britain, featuring an upper glazed bookcase section positioned above a sloping fall-front writing desk and lower cupboards or drawers.

Pieces from this period were predominantly constructed from solid mahogany or mahogany veneers. They feature hand-fitted dovetail joinery, brass hardware, and geometric astragal glazing bars set into wooden glass door frames.

Authentic pieces generally feature lighter proportions than earlier Victorian examples, showing signs of hand-carved joinery, original brass escutcheons, standard interior pigeonholes, and natural patination across the writing surface.

Position the bureau in a study, alcove, or living room, using the upper display shelves for modern ceramics or art books to create a visual contrast against the dark polished mahogany.

Keep dark mahogany away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber movement or bleaching. Clean regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish annually.
