19th Century Camphor Wood and Brass-bound Campaign Trunk, Circa 1880

19th century
Description

A 19th century camphor wood campaign trunk, dating to circa 1880.

Constructed from richly figured camphor wood, the rectangular trunk is extensively fitted with brass bindings and protective corner mounts, characteristic of travelling and campaign furniture.

The hinged lid is fitted with a recessed brass carrying handle, with further brass carrying handles to either side. The front retains its brass escutcheon and additional recessed handle.

The lid opens to reveal a spacious interior and a useful internal candle box to one side.

The beautifully figured camphor wood has developed a particularly attractive warm golden colour and patination, complemented by the aged brass fittings.

A good decorative and practical example of a traditional campaign travelling trunk.

Circa 1880.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Military campaign trunks were designed for British military officers traveling abroad during the nineteenth century, built to withstand transport while offering secure storage for personal belongings.

Camphor wood was selected for ocean-going trunks because its natural aromatic resins repel insects and resist moisture, protecting clothing and documents during transit.

Authentic campaign trunks feature flush-fitting brass mounts, recessed carrying handles, hand-cut dovetail joinery, and protective corner caps designed to prevent damage during movement.

A campaign trunk functions effectively as a central coffee table, an accent piece at the foot of a bed, or a functional storage chest in a hallway or study.

Dust the timber regularly with a soft cloth and apply clear beeswax polish occasionally, taking care not to disturb the aged patina on the brass straps and fittings.
