Camphor Wood Coffer
A camphor wood coffer is a practical storage piece often encountered as a military campaign trunk or a Chinese export chest. These items combine utility with traditional craftsmanship, originating from various periods including the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
The selection includes solid camphorwood trunks, blanket boxes, and storage chests featuring brass fittings or carved decorations. Many examples reflect nineteenth-century campaign styles designed for travel and colonial use.
Buyers will find pieces ranging from plain military trunks with recessed brass handles to heavily carved Chinese storage boxes. These items function equally well as traditional blanket chests or repurposed coffee tables in contemporary interiors.
How they were made
Construction relies upon solid camphorwood timbers, selected for their aromatic properties and resistance to insects. Pieces are frequently reinforced with brass bound edges, corners, and flush-fitting campaign handles.
Surfaces range from plain, beautifully grained timber to elaborately carved panels depicting traditional Chinese motifs. Joinery is robust, designed to withstand the rigours of maritime shipping and military transit.
