Military campaign chests were developed in the 18th and 19th centuries for British military officers stationed abroad. Designed to be transported during travel, these pieces were constructed to withstand movement, often featuring recessed hardware to prevent snagging during transit.

These chests were predominantly crafted from dense hardwoods such as camphor wood, teak, or mahogany. Camphor wood was specifically favoured for tropical deployment due to its natural oils, which repel insects and resist moisture.

Authentic pieces feature inset or flush-fitting brass hardware, including side handles, corner straps, and drawer pulls. Construction typically includes hand-cut dovetail joints, heavy timber construction, and original mortise locks.

A campaign chest functions effectively as a low coffee table, a storage chest at the foot of a bed, or a decorative anchor piece in a hallway or study.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a clear beeswax polish periodically along the wood grain. Keep the timber away from direct heat sources to prevent cracking, and gently clean the brass fittings with a soft cloth without removing natural patination.
