Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian oil lamps emerged in the mid-to-late 19th century following the development of refined kerosene and paraffin fuels. They typically feature decorative metal bases, glass reservoirs, complex burner mechanisms, and ornamental glass shades designed to diffuse light.

These lamps were constructed using cast brass, bronze, or silver-plated metals for the base and column to ensure weight and stability. Reservoirs were formed from cut crystal, moulded glass, or ceramics, while shades featured cranberry, etched, or tinted glass crafted to withstand burner heat.

Authentic Victorian examples often display maker marks on the brass burner turning knobs, such as Duplex or Hinks. They feature solid brass or cast metal weight distribution, period-correct glass cut patterns, and authentic threaded fittings rather than modern electrical conversions or glue joints.

A Victorian oil lamp serves as a refined focal point when placed on a dark wood sideboard, mantelpiece, or console table. It pairs effectively with traditional period settings, eclectically styled libraries, or maximalist schemes featuring brass hardware and rich colour palettes.

Brass components should be dusted with a soft microfibre cloth and gently cleaned with specialised metal polish if unlacquered. Glass reservoirs and shades ought to be washed carefully in warm, soapy water, ensuring all fuel residue is removed before storage or display.
