This Victorian oil lamp from the late 19th or early 20th century combines antique brass, clear and frosted glass, and dark veined marble. It comprises a frosted glass globe shade etched with a band of anthemion and scroll motifs, a clear glass chimney, a pierced brass Vulcan burner with a wick winder bearing the Vulcan name and globe motif, a tiered brass font with a filler cap, a reeded brass column stem with a decorative capital, and a stepped circular brass base resting on a marbled ceramic plinth. The brass exhibits a warm, mellow patina, and the shade features intricate floral etching. Measuring 71.5 cm high, 18.5 cm wide, and 18.5 cm deep, the lamp is complete with its burner mechanism and glassware. In a modern home, this piece serves as a decorative accessory for placement on a sideboard, side table, or desk within a gentleman's library or study. The combination of metal, glass, and stone elements brings period character to an interior scheme. The lamp requires no special installation beyond placement on a suitable flat surface and provides traditional lighting presence without electrical conversion, maintaining its original form as an antique oil lamp with burner hardware intact.

FAQs

Column oil lamps became prominent in the late nineteenth century during the Victorian era following the widespread availability of kerosene and paraffin. Designed to emulate classical Greek and Roman architecture, these lamps feature fluted stems, brass reservoirs, and etched glass shades to provide ambient domestic illumination prior to electric power.

Victorian oil lamps were constructed using cast or pressed brass for the reservoir, wick mechanism, and central column. Bases were frequently weighted with solid marble, slate, or cast iron, while shades and chimneys were blown from glass and finished with etched or frosted decorative patterns.

Authentic period oil lamps display stamped maker marks or burner names on the wick turner wheel, such as Duplex or Vulcan. Construction details include cast brass components with age-appropriate oxidisation, heavy weighted bases, and hand-etched glass shades showing subtle irregularities from historic manufacturing processes.

An antique brass oil lamp functions as a decorative focal point when placed on a dark wood sideboard, marble mantelpiece, or library desk. Pair it with contemporary artwork or structured ceramics to create contrast between historic brass craftsmanship and minimalist interiors.

Maintain brass components by dusting regularly with a soft microfibre cloth and avoiding harsh chemical abrasives that strip aged patina. Glass chimneys and shades can be washed separately in warm soapy water, rinsed thoroughly, and dried completely before reassembly.
