Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in large country estates during the 18th and 19th centuries, housekeepers cupboards were utilitarian storage units managed by the head housekeeper. Placed in pantries, larders, or service corridors, they were designed to securely store linens, expensive spices, dry provisions, and household essentials.

Victorian country cupboards were primarily constructed from locally sourced softwoods such as pine or deal. These pieces featured mortise and tenon joinery, hand-planed backboards, and were typically painted with durable milk or lead-based paints to protect the timber in unheated service areas.

Authentic pieces display signs of natural wear, including layered paint history where older colours show through worn areas, particularly around hand contact points like handles and keyholes. Structural markers include hand-cut dovetails, original turned wooden knobs, iron hinges, and hand-sawn backboards.

These cupboards serve as ideal freestanding pantry storage in modern kitchens, dining rooms, or utility areas. The textured, patinated finish creates visual contrast when positioned against clean, modern walls or paired with contemporary architectural elements.

Preserving historical painted surfaces requires dusting with a dry microfibre cloth and keeping the item away from direct heat sources or high humidity to prevent wood movement. A clear microcrystalline wax can be sparingly applied to stabilize and protect friable painted surfaces without altering the colour.
