Antique Edwardian Near Pair of Brass Oil Lamps with Opaline Glass Shades

1900 - 1920
Description

A decorative near pair of antique Edwardian oil lamps dating to circa 1900, each with a polished brass reservoir and pedestal base, surmounted by an opaline glass shade.

The lamps retain their traditional oil-lamp fittings, including the burner controls and clear glass chimneys. The substantial white opaline glass shades are particularly attractive, moulded in relief with an elegant floral and foliate design typical of the period. The warm polished brass contrasts beautifully with the softly coloured glass.

Before electric lighting became commonplace, oil lamps such as these provided an important source of domestic illumination. Their decorative design meant that they were intended not simply as functional lighting, but as attractive furnishings in their own right.

Although not an exact pair, the two lamps are extremely close in design, scale and appearance and display beautifully together. They would make an impressive pair on a console, sideboard or large mantelpiece and could also be used individually in different areas of a room.

Condition report:

In good antique condition with age-related wear consistent with their age and use. There is some natural variation between the two lamps as they are a near pair. Please refer to the photographs for further detail.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Edwardian oil lamps, produced during the early 20th century, typically feature cast or spun brass bases paired with decorative glass shades and clear glass chimneys designed for burning paraffin fuel.

These lighting fixtures were constructed primarily from solid brass reservoirs and pedestals, fitted with brass wick burner mechanisms, clear glass chimneys, and blown or moulded glass shades.

Authentic pieces generally display maker stamps or patent marks on the brass winder control, aged patina or mild oxidisation on metal elements, and period-appropriate hand-pressed or mouth-blown glass shades.

Oil lamps can be placed symmetrically on a sideboard, fireplace mantelpiece, or console table to serve as decorative sculptural accents in traditional or eclectic living spaces.

Clean the glass shades with warm water and mild soap, while dusting the brass components with a soft microfibre cloth without using harsh chemical polishes that strip historical patina.
