This large nineteenth-century Renaissance Revival charger is made of silvered metal with a polished silver finish. An octagonal shape defines the piece, featuring an outer border with raised mouldings and a sawtooth edge, an elaborate relief repoussé decoration of dense foliate scrollwork across the surface, and four circular and two oval scene vignettes surrounding a central portrait bust of Miguel de Cervantes. Slight bending marks the edges, consistent with age. Displaying this decorative charger above a sideboard in a gentleman's library provides a striking focal point for the room. The object measures 57.5 cm in height, 57.5 cm in width, and 2 cm in depth.

A repousse charger is a large decorative metal platter featuring raised designs created by hammering or pressing the reverse side of the metal sheet. Popularised during the Renaissance and revived in the nineteenth century, these ornamental pieces often depict historical figures, mythological themes, or detailed scrolling foliage.

These chargers were typically crafted from copper, brass, pewter, or silvered base metals using repousse hammering, chasing, or electrotyping processes. Fine surface details were defined from the front using handheld chasing tools to create precise textures and relief features.

Authentic period chargers display clear evidence of hand-tooling on the reverse, natural surface oxidisation, and age-related patina within the deeper relief crevices. Electrotype versions from the period often feature a double-walled rim construction or dark copper backing inside the reverse cavity.

Mount the charger securely as a focal wall piece above a sideboard or mantelpiece, or present it on an easel within a library bookcase. The reflective metallic relief provides visual warmth and texture when offset by neutral walls or timber panelling.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth to clear debris from intricate relief channels. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners, abrasive pastes, or vigorous rubbing, which can permanently strip silver plating and alter natural surface patination.
