19th Century Gilt Bronze Antique Hall Lantern

19th century
Description

19th Century Gilt Bronze Antique Hall Lantern

A handsome 19th-century gilt bronze hall lantern, of impressive size and richly decorative design. This elegant antique lantern features a beautifully cast gilt bronze framework surrounding four textured glass panels, with the warm, aged gilding providing a striking contrast to the softly translucent glass.

The lantern has an ornate architectural form, with scrolling bronze supports, floral and foliate decoration, swagged garlands, decorative urn finials and an elaborate pierced crown. The tapering body culminates in a decorative pendant finial, giving the lantern an especially elegant silhouette.

The combination of gilt bronze, decorative casting and textured glass makes this a particularly eye-catching piece of antique lighting. Its generous proportions make it well suited to a substantial entrance hall, staircase, reception room, dining room or period interior, while its refined classical decoration would also work effectively in a more contemporary setting.

Large 19th-century gilt bronze hall lanterns are prized for their decorative presence as well as their craftsmanship, with ornate scrolling frameworks and foliate ornament being characteristic features of antique examples. 

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Neoclassical hall lanterns are suspended light fixtures originating in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, characterised by symmetrical geometry, classical architectural proportions, and motifs such as drapery swags, acanthus leaves, and urn-shaped glass vessels.

These fixtures were predominantly constructed using cast bronze or brass, which was often finished with gilt mercury plating (ormolu), paired with hand-blown or cut glass panes designed to enclose the interior candle or gas fittings.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces display cast bronze components with hand-chased details, uneven oxidisation in recessed areas, hand-cut screw threads, and heavy glass elements showing subtle hand-blown variations rather than modern machine uniformities.

Place the lantern as a central lighting feature in an entryway, stairwell, or hallway where its metallic finish can contrast with neutral wall paints and modern architectural moulding.

Dust gilt metal regularly with a dry, soft-bristled brush, avoiding liquid polishes or chemical cleaners that degrade original gilding; glass shades should be gently wiped with a lint-free damp cloth.
