19th Century Mahogany Linen Press with Blind Fretwork Cornice and Four Drawers

19th century
Description

A handsome 19th Century mahogany linen press of excellent proportions, standing on bracket feet and retaining a beautifully detailed moulded cornice above an attractive blind fretwork frieze.

The upper section is enclosed by a pair of finely figured mahogany panelled doors, displaying particularly attractive grain patterns. Opening to reveal a practical fitted interior with a series of traditional sliding linen trays, offering excellent storage for linens, clothing or household items.

The lower section comprises four generous drawers fitted with elegant brass swan-neck handles, providing additional storage and complementing the rich mahogany colour throughout.

This piece benefits from a warm, deep mahogany patina acquired over many years and would make an impressive addition to both traditional and contemporary interiors. The decorative fretwork cornice, beautifully figured mahogany veneers and elegant proportions make this an especially attractive example of a traditional English linen press.

In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A linen press is a traditional piece of storage furniture featuring a cupboard top section above a chest of drawers, originally designed for storing household linens and textiles during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Nineteenth-century linen presses were typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as mahogany or oak, often incorporating flame mahogany veneers on door panels and hand-cut dovetail joints in the drawer construction.

Authentic nineteenth-century examples often feature hand-carved decorative elements like blind fretwork cornices, original brass drop handles, secondary drawer linings made of pine or oak, and evidence of historical hand-planing.

In contemporary settings, a mahogany linen press can serve as a statement wardrobe in a primary bedroom, a sophisticated storage unit in a dining room for tableware, or an elegant hideaway for modern media equipment.

Keep mahogany furniture away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber movement or veneer lifting, and apply a high-quality beeswax polish along the grain twice a year to maintain the protective finish.
