Antique Khamseh Confederacy Baharlu Tribal Main Carpet

19th century
For Sale by Siez Gallery
Description

Antique Khamseh Confederacy tribal carpet, handwoven by the Turkic-speaking Baharlu sub-tribe, dates back to the late 19th century and stands as an unusual, room-sized 300cm x 220cm dimensions and prestigious raw tribal construction. The complex graphic layout centre's around an oversized, nested triple-lozenge medallion—featuring a core midnight-blue diamond inside a terracotta-red shield—which beautifully balances an expansive, deep indigo field densely populated with the signature Baharlu Murgi (pecking bird) motifs and framed by contrasting ivory geometric corner spandrels. What elevates this piece is its structural foundation, which is woven entirely out of hand-spun, dark variegated goat hair warp threads that anchor the vibrant, naturally dyed wool pile and peak through visually in the lower-central region where the rug displays honest, historical age wear.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Pronounced colour abrash across the dark blue field: yarn dyed in small nomadic batches.
Gradual wear through the wool pile to foundation threads: long-term foot traffic.
Dark hand-spun foundation threads visible at worn spots: traditional south Persian tribal construction.
Freehand geometric bird and plant filler ornaments: informal loom work drawn without cartoons.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This 19th century Persian tribal area rug is handwoven by the Turkic-speaking Baharlu sub-tribe of the Khamseh Confederacy from hand-spun wool and dark variegated goat hair warp threads. The indigo blue and terracotta colour palette forms an intricate geometric design consisting of a central diamond medallion, hexagonal repeating motifs within an expansive indigo field, and stepped borders framed by contrasting ivory geometric corner spandrels. Historical age wear shows clearly in the lower-central region, revealing the underlying structural foundation, alongside natural dye variations and dense Murgi tribal motifs throughout the pile. Measuring 300cm x 220cm, this large flat textile suits placement as a main floor covering in a spacious reception room, study, or gentleman's library.

FAQs

Khamseh Baharlu carpets are traditional hand-woven floor coverings crafted by the Baharlu tribe, one of five groups comprising the Khamseh Confederacy in Fars province, South Persia.

These carpets are constructed using hand-spun sheep wool for both the pile and the foundation, saturated with natural vegetable and mineral dyes.

Authentic Baharlu weavings typically feature dark indigo blue fields, complex geometric borders, repeated small stylized motifs, and a central diamond medallion structure.

A dark geometric tribal carpet acts as a visual anchor in a room, contrasting against contemporary minimalist furnishings or complementing rich timber and leather elements.

Vacuum regularly using a suction-only setting without a beater bar, rotate periodically to distribute traffic wear evenly, and address spills promptly with cold water and mild detergent.
