Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Regency period candelabra produced in the early 19th century are characterised by neoclassical forms influenced by Roman, Greek, and Egyptian designs. They feature dark patinated bronze contrasted against gilt-bronze, or ormolu, decorative elements such as acanthus leaves and fluted columns.

Ormolu refers to cast bronze objects finished with fire-gilding, a process involving a mercury-gold amalgam applied to bronze and heated to burn off the mercury, leaving a coating of gold. These elements are combined with patinated dark bronze shafts, cast metal counterweights in the base, and hand-chased surface detailing.

Authentic 19th-century pieces display sharp hand-chasing on the gilt areas, heavy cast construction with threaded rods holding the sectioned components together, and natural wear to the gilding along high points. Later reproductions often feature single-piece die-casting, lighter alloys, or chemical lacquering rather than mercury gilding.

Positioning a symmetrical pair on a fireplace mantelpiece or a dining room sideboard creates balance and visual structure. Combining classical bronzes with clean contemporary surfaces or minimalist artwork offers a contrast between modern textures and historical metalwork.

Dust metal surfaces regularly with a dry, soft-bristled brush or microfibre cloth to prevent buildup. Avoid chemical metal polishes, abrasive cleansers, or water, as these remove original patination and strip delicate mercury gilding.
