LVS Decorative Arts has dated this Antique Zanzibar Traders Chest to the 19th Century.
The top consists of brass stud and metalwork decoration with applied moulding to the outer edge leading down to a moulded edge with brass studs and metalwork, the top having two large brass hinges and opening to reveal a candle box and good storage space.

This leads down to three drawers also decorated with brass studs and metalwork, all with brass handles.
Each side of the chest having a large brass carrying handle, the chest is supported by two carved paw feet to the front and block feet to back.

This style of chest probably originated in Sri Lanka but as many South Asians moved to different countries in the Indian Ocean they were also made in Zanzibar and tend to be known now as a Zanzibar chest, they were used by traders as they travelled to different areas selling spices and silks and were also used as dowry chests.

This Zanzibar chest is in very good condition for age, is of stable construction and can go straight into a home - this piece would suit either a period setting or equally a modern home giving great decorative storage space and ideal alternative coffee table!
