Georgian Silver and Gold Mother of Pearl Marcasite Drop Earrings

18th century
Description

Fantastic Georgian‑era earrings featuring luminous oval mother‑of‑pearl plaques framed by hand‑set marcasites mounted in silver. The plaques have the lovely soft luminescent glow characteristic of antique mother of pearl, rather than the shining iridescence of more modern shell, each set with a delicate floral cluster of very bright twinkly marcasites. The backs show typical Georgian construction with cross‑brace mounts, with the overlaying pieces washed in gold.

• Condition: The earrings are in very good antique condition; there is a little tarnish on the backs.

• Fixing: Nine-carat (375) gold screwbacks, likely converted long ago.

• Hallmarks/stamps: Marked 9CT on the screws.

• Era: Estimated Georgian (c.1714-1837).

• Size: 2.7cm from the top of the post to the bottom of the drop. The main plaques measure 2 x 1.6cm.

• Weight: 4.3g.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Georgian jewellery, produced between 1714 and 1837, is defined by intricate hand crafting, close-backed gem settings, and organic motifs such as flowers, foliage, and ribbons. Artisans frequently combined silver surfaces with gold backings to prevent silver tarnish from marking skin and clothing.

Georgian marcasite jewellery typically features iron pyrite stones faceted into flat-bottomed pyramids, set into sterling silver mountings. These were often combined with natural materials such as mother of pearl, coral, or foiled gemstones to create light-reflecting contrast.

Authentic Georgian marcasite items feature hand-cut, bead-set stones rather than modern glued components. They generally possess closed-back foil-backed constructions, silver settings paired with gold fittings, and signs of period wear along the metal solder lines.

Georgian drop earrings provide a refined contrast when paired with contemporary minimalist tailoring, neutral knitwear, or formal eveningwear. The subtle shimmer of mother of pearl and marcasite complements both casual daytime silk blouses and structured evening dresses.

Clean marcasite and mother of pearl jewellery gently using a soft, dry lint-free cloth. Avoid submersion in water, ultrasonic cleaners, or harsh chemicals, as moisture can loosen set stones and damage organic mother of pearl layers.
