Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian open bookcases typically feature substantial timber frames, adjustable shelves, and architectural details such as carved corbels or moulded cornices. Designed without glass doors, they offered direct access to extensive personal collections in domestic libraries and studies.

These bookcases were constructed using solid native hardwoods, predominantly oak, featuring hand-cut joinery, adjustable shelf supports, and heavy plinth bases. Back panels were often crafted from solid tongue-and-groove pine or oak boards.

Authentic pieces display signs of hand-planed backboards, genuine wear around shelf peg holes, traditional joinery, and natural patination across the timber. Original Victorian examples frequently feature distinct architectural elements, such as hand-carved corbels or pilasters.

A large open bookcase serves as a structural focal point in a living room, hallway, or study when styled with a mix of bound volumes, ceramics, and decorative objects. Contrast the warm oak tone with modern wall colours or contemporary artwork to balance traditional and modern aesthetics.

Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year to maintain the timber finish. Position the piece away from direct heat sources and extreme humidity fluctuations to prevent the wood from warping or splitting.
