These two baluster vases belong to the Art Deco period and stem from English production around 1920. Made of ceramic with a metallic and iridescent lustre glaze, they present an iridescent light blue and pale pink ground that catches the light. The hand-painted decoration displays blue and dark-scaled fish swimming downwards amid painted reeds and aquatic flora, outlined in gilt. Each vase has a narrow fluted neck, a curved bulbous body, and a flared circular foot. They stand 25 cm high by 12 cm wide. In a contemporary home, this pair suits display upon a mantelpiece, a side table, or a cabinet shelf. The luminous surface and underwater aquatic scenes offer a decorative focal point in a living room, dining room, or hallway. Their proportion allows placement on narrow shelves or paired symmetrically on a mantel.

Shelley lustreware refers to decorative ceramic items produced by the Shelley Pottery in Staffordshire, England, primarily during the 1910s and 1920s under the art direction of Walter Slater. These pieces are recognised for their iridescent metallic glazes and hand-painted artistic subjects ranging from fish and butterflies to floral motifs.

Lustreware pieces were crafted using a fine ceramic or porcelain body coated with liquid metallic oxides such as gold, copper, or bismuth. The items underwent multiple kiln firings, including a specific reduction firing process that deposited a thin, shimmering metallic film onto the glazed surface.

Authentic pieces typically feature the printed Shelley factory backstamp on the base alongside a facsimile signature mark for Walter Slater. The surface exhibits a distinct pearlescent sheen over hand-painted or transfer-applied decoration, with painted pattern or shape numbers visible on the underside.

Position lustreware vases where natural or ambient directional light can illuminate the iridescent surface glaze, such as on a mantelpiece, console table, or windowsill. Displaying them as a symmetrical pair or alongside neutral ceramic textures highlights their metallic finish without cluttering the visual space.

Lustre glazes are delicate and susceptible to abrasion. Clean the surface using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or lukewarm water with mild liquid soap, avoiding abrasive pads, chemical solvents, immersion in water, or placement in dishwashers.
