Antique Silver Plate Pierced Sugar Bowl with Cobalt Glass Liner & Sifter – Circa 1905

1900 - 1920
Description

A Charming Antique Edwardian Silver Plate Sugar Bowl With Cobalt Glass Liner featuring an elegant swing handle that makes it easy to lift and serve at the table. The bright blue liner gives a striking contrast against the cool tone of the silver plate. The outer body is finely pierced with repeating geometric and rosette-style motifs that allow the glass colour to show through.

The piece stands on a stepped pedestal foot with a square plinth base, giving it a confident, architectural presence. The included pierced spoon is well matched for serving sugar, sweetener, or small condiments, and echoes the openwork theme – circa 1905.

* A small but distinctive serving piece, perfect for sugar, sweeteners, condiments, or little treats, bringing instant theatre to tea, coffee, and the table.

Measurements:

Height (handle up): 6 1/2" (approx. 16.5cm)

Diameter across top: 3 1/2" (approx. 9cm)

Total weight: 402g

In good condition – The silver plated surfaces show only light surface wear consistent with age. There are no chips or cracks to the cobalt blue glass liner.

The outer silver-plated body has openwork fretwork, repeating geometric motifs, and circular rosette cut-outs through which the blue glass shows. A curved swing handle is attached at the sides, and the vessel stands on a stepped pedestal foot above a square plinth base. The companion sifter spoon has a perforated bowl and a shaped handle with a textured border. The bowl stands 16.5 cm high and 9 cm wide. Set upon a dining table or sideboard, this piece suits service for afternoon tea or coffee, holding sugar, sweeteners, small condiments, or little treats.

FAQs

An antique pierced sugar basket is an Edwardian or Victorian table accessory designed to serve granulated or sugar loaves, featuring an openwork metal frame fitted with a removable coloured glass insert.

These vessels were typically constructed from electroplated nickel silver or sterling silver for the pierced outer basket, combined with hand-blown cobalt blue glass for the inner liner.

Authentic pieces feature electroplate maker marks stamped on the metal base, period-appropriate geometric or neo-classical pierced motifs, and age-related wear on the bottom of the glass liner.

Place the piece on a dining sideboard, coffee table tray, or open kitchen shelving where light can pass through the cobalt glass to accentuate the blue hue.

Remove the glass liner to wash separately with warm water and mild dish soap, while polishing the silver-plated exterior gently using a soft cloth and non-abrasive silver polish.
