Exceptional Inlaid Mahogany Breakfront Display Cabinet on Stand, Circa 1880

19th century
Description

An exceptional quality mahogany breakfront display cabinet on stand of elegant proportions, beautifully decorated with satinwood and boxwood line inlays throughout.

The upper section is fitted with four astragal glazed doors enclosing adjustable shelves, the breakfront form providing both visual interest and practical display space. The doors retain their attractive geometric glazing bars and open to reveal a well-fitted interior ideal for the display of books, porcelain, silver or other treasured collections.

The cabinet is raised on a finely constructed stand incorporating a series of drawers with original decorative brass handles. The frieze, drawers and uprights are embellished with finely executed inlaid oval paterae and delicate stringing, all demonstrating the high quality of craftsmanship associated with the finest cabinet makers of the late Victorian and Edwardian periods.

Standing on elegant square tapering legs with further inlaid decoration, the cabinet possesses a rich mahogany colour and excellent figuring throughout. The restrained architectural cornice and refined proportions give the piece a timeless elegance that would complement both period and contemporary interiors.

A particularly impressive and decorative display cabinet of outstanding quality and generous proportions.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Sheraton Revival furniture, produced in the late 19th century, draws inspiration from the 18th-century designs of Thomas Sheraton. Key characteristics include slender classical proportions, delicate wood marquetry or satinwood crossbanding, and geometric astragal glazing bars.

High-grade mahogany served as the primary timber, often selected for its deep colour and straight grain. Secondary details frequently incorporated decorative satinwood inlay, blown glass door panels, brass drop handles, and oak or pine drawer linings.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers, original brass locks, and natural wear patterns on interior shelf supports. Glazing bars should hold individual glass panes rather than a single sheet of modern float glass.

Positioning a mahogany piece against light-coloured walls creates balanced contrast in dining rooms or living spaces. Modern interior styling pairs dark wood cabinets with contemporary ceramics, glassware, or minimalist book arrangements to avoid an overly cluttered aesthetic.

Maintain the finish by dusting regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the cabinet away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent wood movement, veneer lifting, or finish fading.
