Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This traditional Chinese storage chest from the 1930 period uses wood, lacquer, and pigment in black and red colours, applying frame and panel construction. The black lacquer exterior shows noticeable wear and craquelure across its surfaces, complemented by an inset red fabric panel centred on the front. A hand-painted floral image depicting white peonies on a gold background adorns this red panel, while the lower frame finishes with a carved scalloped apron above straight wooden feet. Measuring 55 cm wide by 53 cm deep and 91 cm high, the coffer offers practical storage proportions. Position this piece within a living room, hallway, or bedroom as a standalone decorative storage trunk that brings traditional Oriental style and vibrant colour contrast into the interior. The dark wooden frame provides robust housing for linens, keepsakes, or seasonal items while serving as a striking visual accent against neutral walls. Buyers appreciate traditional Chinese chests for adding historical character, rich texture, and functional surface space to contemporary and eclectic room schemes alike.

FAQs

A traditional Chinese lacquer coffer is a wooden storage chest coated with protective natural tree resin and decorated with painted panels, gilding, or floral motifs. Historically used for storing garments and household valuables, these pieces feature frame-and-panel construction and carved aprons.

These chests were crafted using native hardwoods or softwoods such as pine, camphor, and elm, assembled with traditional joinery techniques without metal nails. The exterior was coated with natural lacquer, mineral pigments like vermilion red, gold leaf, and painted detailing.

Authentic pieces typically display natural surface craquelure, finish wear along edges, and frame shrinkage near joinery seams. The underside and internal structure often show unrefined timber grain, hand-planed tool marks, and aged iron or brass hardware.

A decorative lacquer chest functions as a striking accent piece when positioned in an entryway, living room alcove, or bedroom space. The contrast of black lacquer and red panelling creates visual weight alongside modern neutral walls and contemporary furnishings.

Keep lacquerware situated away from direct sunlight, radiators, and sudden changes in humidity to avoid timber movement and lacquer flaking. Clean gently using a dry, soft microfibre cloth without water or chemical polish.
