These early Victorian inkwells are made from clear glass and silver plate, dating to approximately 1840 in a Victorian gentleman's library style. Each piece comprises a square glass base with visible signs of age including surface wear and dark tarnishing on the metal, paired with a hinged silver-plated lid carrying a locking loop handle and a gasket seal. The glass displays a transparent finish while the hardware shows a reflective silver-coloured metallic sheen. Measuring 3.8 cm high, 4.4 cm wide, and 4.4 cm deep, these functional accessories fit comfortably on an office desk to hold ink for a fountain pen or quill, echoing their historical use in writing slopes and campaign writing desks. They suit a study, home office, or library workspace as working desktop containers or decorative historical accents.

Victorian travel inkwells were compact, secure containers designed for correspondents, travellers, and military officers to carry liquid ink safely without spillage during journeys in the nineteenth century.

These items typically feature heavy cut or molded glass vessels paired with brass, nickel, or silver-plated lids fitted with internal leather or rubber seals to prevent ink leakage.

Authentic early Victorian examples often display heavy molded glass bases, screw-down or spring-loaded latch mechanisms, and period manufacturer marks or silver-plate hallmarks.

These pieces function effectively as decorative accents on modern home office desks, library shelving, or entry consoles, adding historical interest alongside leather-bound books and metal accessories.

Clean the glass base with warm water and mild soap, while gently polishing the metal lid with a soft cloth and non-abrasive silver cleaner, avoiding prolonged immersion to preserve internal seals.
