Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Open salt cellars were essential dining accessories throughout the nineteenth century prior to the widespread introduction of anti-caking agents in free-flowing table salt. Victorian examples often featured elaborate classical motifs, repousse scrollwork, and Renaissance Revival ornamentation produced by silversmiths across major metalworking centres such as London and Birmingham.

Victorian salt cellars were typically crafted from solid sterling silver, consisting of 92.5 percent pure silver alloyed with copper for structural durability. Artisans employed hand-chasing, repousse relief work, casting, and engraving to shape the vessel body and construct detailed decorative feet or handles.

Authentic British silver from the Victorian period bears a set of official hallmarks stamped by an assay office, such as the leopards head for London or the anchor for Birmingham. These marks include a makers mark, the sterling lion passant, a date letter corresponding to the year of manufacture, and often a duty mark displaying the monarchs profile.

Antique silver salt cellars can be displayed on a dining table or sideboard top as functional accent pieces during formal meals. Alternatively, they function as small catchalls for delicate jewellery, pins, or decorative items on a vanity table or desk.

To prevent corrosion caused by sodium chloride, salt should be removed immediately after use, and the interior washed with warm soapy water before drying thoroughly. Tarnish can be safely cleared using a soft cloth and specialised silver polish, avoiding abrasive pads that could wear down delicate chasing and hallmarks.
