Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian novelty cruet set takes the form of an early automobile with a silver-plated finish and cut-glass containers. The vehicle body contains four distinct condiment vessels, including a lidded mustard pot, a perforated-top pepper shaker, an open salt well with deep facets, and a glass oil bottle topped with a faceted stopper. Additional visible details comprise a steering wheel, a front-mounted headlamp, spoked wheels, mudguards, and a curved dashboard design. The piece measures 8.2 cm high, 16.5 cm wide, and 10.2 cm deep. Suitable for display on a sideboard top in a gentleman's library or dining room, this novelty item functions as both a table setting for condiments and a moving toy with working wheels that allow it to be rolled across a flat surface. The silver-plated metal reflects light against the clear glass facets of the condiment holders, creating a decorative contrast of textures.

FAQs

A novelty cruet set is a decorative dining accessory designed to hold table condiments such as salt, pepper, mustard, and vinegar, rendered in imaginative shapes like automobiles, boats, or animals. Popularised during the Victorian and Edwardian eras, these pieces combined functional tableware with whimsical metalworking craft.

Cruet sets typically feature a base constructed from silver plate or sterling silver, fitted with containers made from hand-cut or moulded lead crystal glass. Metal components often include silver-plated lids, salt liners, and decorative handles.

Authentic pieces generally bear electroplate makers marks or registration numbers stamped on the underside of the frame or chassis. Quality examples feature hand-cut crystal glassware fitted tightly into custom-formed metal galleries.

While originally intended for formal dining tables, novelty cruet sets can be styled as decorative accent pieces on a sideboard top, drinks trolley, or within a glass display cabinet. They also serve as conversation pieces when placed at the centre of a dining table.

Clean the metal stand gently using a soft cloth and a specialised silver polish, avoiding abrasive cleaners that could strip the silver plating. Wash glass bottles by hand with warm soapy water, ensuring salt residue is thoroughly dried to prevent corrosion of metal lids.
