Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian gas lanterns were outdoor lighting fixtures originally designed during the nineteenth century to burn town gas, featuring ventilation caps to release heat and fumes. Many of these period pieces have since been converted to electricity for modern functional use.

These lanterns were typically constructed from cast or wrought iron, sheet copper, and leaded brass frames fitted with clear glass panes. The exterior surfaces were frequently painted or lacquered to protect the metal structure from outdoor weathering.

Authentic gas lanterns often display original ventilation cowls, remnants of gas pipework or jet mountings at the base, and evidence of hand-riveted metal construction. Look for age-appropriate wear, layered paint finishes, or natural oxidation on the internal metal components.

Position the lantern on a hallway console, side table, or sheltered patio table to serve as a characterful accent light. Paired with a warm filament bulb, the aged finish adds textural interest to both contemporary and traditional decorative schemes.

Clean the glass panes with a soft damp cloth and mild glass cleaner, avoiding abrasive chemical agents on the painted frame. Ensure electrical wiring is inspected by a qualified electrician and keep the lantern protected from extreme moisture if placed outdoors.
