Georgian Baluster Wine Glass

Description

This is an elegant Georgian, English, baluster wine glass dating from the beginning of the 18th century, c1730. Similar glasses can be seen in L M Bickerton's, Eighteenth Century English Drinking Glasses (1986), on page 86, numbers 135 and 137.

The glass is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot commensurate with some 300 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the underside of the foot.

The glass has a trumpet-shaped bowl with a deep, solid base enclosing an air tear and measuring 6.5 cm (2.6 inches) in diameter at the rim. The bowl sits on three collars and a true baluster stem containing a second air tear, and an additional basal knop. The stem ends in a conical, folded foot which measures 7 cm (2.8 inches) in diameter. The glass is 16.5 cm (6.6 inches) in height. There are a couple of long lateral shallow scratches to the inside of the bowl. There are no chips, cracks, other significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration.

English lead glass weighing in at 150 g. (~ 5 oz.).

Georgian baluster wine glasses feature architectural stems inspired by stone balustrades, produced primarily in Britain between the late 17th century and mid-18th century. They are characterised by heavy lead glass, bell or trumpet-shaped bowls, and decorative stem knops.

These glasses were hand-blown using lead crystal glass, which provided clarity and weight. The stems feature hand-formed knops and occasional air tears created by entrapping air bubbles during manufacture, supported on folded or conical feet with pontil marks beneath.

Authentic pieces exhibit weight due to lead content, a snapped or ground pontil scar beneath the base, minor striations or small air inclusions within the glass matrix, and hand-worked variations rather than modern moulded uniformity.
