Antique Teak Blanket Chest

19th century
Description

A lovely antique blanket chest dating from the mid to late 19th century. It is made from solid teak with hand cut dovetail joints and metal carrying handles. It was likely once a sailor's chest and has the original owner's initials engraved on the top "D.S".

A good size for a coffee table, end of the bed storage or toy trunk.

It is in very good condition for its age and the teak has a wonderful rich colour and patina. It is strong and sturdy and clean and tidy inside. There are some signs of age and use, some general knocks and light marks but nothing detrimental and it displays well. The box has been cleaned and gently polished and is ready for use.

The best description comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions just ask.

Nationwide delivery available through our network of reliable couriers. Please get in touch for an accurate quote to your location.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Historically, blanket chests were essential household storage units used to keep linens, bedding, and textiles protected from dampness and pests. Teak was frequently selected for constructing trunks due to its natural oils, which provide resilience against decay and insect damage.

Traditional chests are commonly constructed from dense hardwoods like teak, oak, or mahogany. Construction features typically include hand-cut dovetail joints at the corners, solid plank lids, heavy-gauge iron or brass hardware, and raised plinth or bracket bases.

Authenticity can be determined by examining joinery and hardware. Look for hand-cut dovetail joints, hand-forged nails or screws, natural wear around handles and keyholes, and minor irregularities in timber dimensions indicative of hand-planing.

A teak chest can serve multiple functions in modern homes, working as a low coffee table in a living area, a storage bench at the foot of a bed, or a functional entry hall piece for footwear and accessories.

Maintain teak furniture by dusting regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth. Periodic applications of natural beeswax polish help retain moisture in the grain and protect the surface, while avoiding placement directly adjacent to heat sources prevents timber shrinkage.
