Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1900s:
Hand-painted gold motifs on red lacquer: traditional late Qing regional workshop painting.
Solid backboards with natural shrinkage gaps: gradual seasoning of old timber.
Empty hinge housings and frame rubs: consistent with the absent original doors.
Brass ring pulls on shaped backplates: period Chinese cabinet fittings.

This 19th-century Chinese open cabinet belongs to the Qing Dynasty period and stands 176 cm high, 117 cm wide, and 48 cm deep. The piece is constructed from hardwood with a red lacquered finish, displaying hand-painted floral motifs across the outer frame and lower panel. The cabinet includes open shelving and a central section fitted with two small drawers featuring brass pull handles. Originally equipped with two doors that have since been removed, the exposed interior reveals vertical timber planking and signs of age and wear. The structure sits on short upright legs and functions today as a statement display unit in a living room, hallway, or dining space for books, ceramics, or decorative objects. In a modern home, this unique shelving unit provides practical storage and display space while adding traditional character. The rich red and dark wood tones contrast with the brass hardware on the drawer fronts, offering a visually striking focal point for an interior. The open format allows for easy access and visibility of items placed on the shelves, making it well suited for everyday use. Its distinct aesthetic suits eclectic, maximalist, or traditional interior schemes, anchoring a room with its historical presence and decorative surface detailing.

Lacquerwork in China dates back thousands of years, reaching notable refined production during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Red lacquer was frequently created using cinnabar pigment, applied in multiple thin layers over wood to protect the structural timber and create a polished, decorative surface.

These cabinets were predominantly built using native timbers such as elm, pine, or camphorwood. The surfaces were treated with natural sap harvested from the lacquer tree (Toxicodendron vernicifluum), painted with mineral pigments, and occasionally accented with brass hardware.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit natural wear to the lacquer coating, structural mortise-and-tenon joinery without modern screws, hand-carved elements, and hand-applied pigments that show characteristic craquelure or age-related patina.

A red lacquer cabinet serves as a focal accent piece. It pairs well with neutral wall tones, minimalist modern seating, or eclectic interiors alongside potted greenery and ceramic collections.

Maintain stable humidity levels to prevent the timber core from warping or cracking. Dust softly with a dry microfibre cloth, avoid harsh chemical cleaners, and keep the item away from direct sunlight or immediate heat sources.
