This Edwardian twin preserve set comprises two cranberry red glass bowls held within a silver-plated wirework stand, dating from circa 1905. Each glass bowl features a ruffled, petal-like rim with a crimped edge and a translucent finish, supported by a silver-plated caddy with a shaped central loop handle and looped wire feet. The set measures 18 cm high, 25.5 cm wide, and 16.5 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this piece serves as a dining table centrepiece or a functional serving accessory for preserves and condiments during formal meals. The combination of cranberry red glass and shiny silver plate provides a bright splash of colour suitable for a traditional English Country House interior setting.

FAQs

Cranberry glass gained immense popularity during the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, favoured for afternoon tea services and formal breakfast settings. The vibrant red hue was traditionally produced by adding gold salts or gold chloride to the molten glass during manufacture.

The bowls were hand-blown using cranberry glass featuring hand-shaped crimped or frilled rims. The fitted frame was typically constructed from silver-plated metal wirework, shaped to form dual ring holders and a central overhead carrying handle.

Authentic pieces generally feature hand-finished rims with minor natural variations and a ground pontil mark on the base of each bowl. The glass displays a rich, translucent ruby-pink shade integrated throughout the material rather than a painted surface layer.

Position the set on a dining table, sideboard, or breakfast tray as a functional server for preserves, honey, or condiments. It also functions well as a decorative tabletop piece on open kitchen shelving or a dresser.

Hand wash the glass bowls in warm water using a mild dish detergent, avoiding dishwashers or abrasive sponges. Clean the silver-plated stand gently with a soft cloth and a dedicated silver polish to remove tarnish without eroding the plating.
